You can also just opt to challenge other real players in a variety of events, and once again your world will be populated by other players when you connect online, allowing you to spontaneously engage in various events, convoy around the map, and so on. If you?d like more of a challenge, there are plenty of tricky feats of skills available via the PR Stunts, and a load of adjustable difficulty options to make opposing drivers a little more fierce. Leaping over sand dunes, cornering around small town streets, or just exploring the wilds at your leisure is just a really fun experience, and overall seems easy enough for just about anyone to enjoy. It also helps that car handling and in-game physics feels amazing. There?s an absolute ton of content to uncover and explore across the expansive Mexico map, so you?re never lacking for something to do. The progression system works pretty well here, just about everything you do manages to feed into the campaign progression nicely, and you?ll constantly be unlocking wheelspins, new vehicles, clothing options for your driver, new horn sounds and so on by clearing various attempts. From there you?ll start exploring Mexico proper, completing events to earn points that will unlock Horizon Adventures, which allow you to gain access to even more events and race types spread across multiple specialities, including PR Stunts, Road Races, Dirt Racing, Cross Country and so on. It?s also a day 1 Game Pass title, making this sort of a no brainer for Xbox owners that subscribe to that service.Īt the onset of the game you?ll be introduced to the Forza Horizon Festival, as you?re literally air-dropped in different vehicles that show off of the new map in a pretty gorgeous intro sequence. And that?s exactly where I land with Forza Horizon 5, it?s an amazing racer that doesn?t deviate too far from the past two entries, but the new Mexico location, and improved look/performance courtesy of the Xbox Series X, makes for one racing game you absolutely should be playing. These are some of the best open-world racers on the market, and I?m consistently floored by how much fun they tend to be even if each subsequent entry doesn?t exactly remake the wheel. I'll definitely be there for the ride.If there is a single racing series that I love more than most, it has to be Playground Games Forza Horizon series. After the varied biomes in Mexico, I'm curious to see where we go next. Playground Games is at the top of their game. In the end, there really is no other arcade racer on the market that comes close. The weekly challenges can feel like a grind after a while (miss one, and you might not be able to win the exclusive car in a loooong time!), and the pay-for-the-map integration (oops, I triggered it again) and the latest car pack timing are an unusual misstep for a game that respects our wallets by offering so much value. It's a 10 in my book, but there is room for improvement. It's just a very, very pretty game all-around, with detailed car models and a varied landscape that beckons to be explored. There are copious options - you can ramp up the difficulty or lower it - but some races demand utter concentration with difficulty presets or the requirement to not hit walls or competition. But other than that, it's such a well-tuned, well-functioning experience. There are still some annoying bugs that may be tied to auto-resume where treasure chests and collectibles don't spawn (or are not collectable) until you restart. It's just nuts.įorza Horizon 5 is mostly stable. From drift challenges, to speed challenges, to long-jump challenges, to stunt challenges, to Battle Royale elimination, CTF, roaming with friends, competing against friends. The number of modes alone is truly staggering. Mary Poppins is needed elsewhere.īut what I found in my 300 hours of gameplay was the richest package of racing ever assembled. But after collecting 700+ cars, the weekly grind has gotten a bit too daunting and I have to move on to other games. I could keep going, mind you: just this week, two new stories were added (for free). After 300 hours of play, I'm finally done with Forza Horizon 5.
